If you've taken a photo of a landscape or used a wide-angled lens to frame a shot, then turning it into a panoramic image can make it look a whole lot more spectacular.
Hugin is designed to 'stitch' photos together to make panoramic images and is based on the Panorama Tools application. If you're not familiar with it, then you might find Hugin tricky to get to grips with, but fortunately there is an extensive online tutorial and a first time assistant.
The basic idea is that you import and 'stitch' together photographs using a combination of automatic 'control points' and manual adjustments. Hugin does a pretty good job of stitching together overlapping parts of images but it's up to you to manually adjust the rest. You'll often find yourself having to add control points on large parts of the image where Hugin simply hasn't done a good job.
Apparently, the ideal is to use a tripod to take your original images in order to ensure best match-up potential and make sure that they're all of the same exposure. Overall however, although the results achieved with Hugin can be impressive, most average users will be better sticking with something simpler like The Panorama Factory.
With a little time and effort, you can create some very professional panoramic images with Hugin, although it's not the most user-friendly panorama program out there.
